Asian digital art has undoubted been flourishing in recent years and its great potential is not to be overlooked. The Japan Government prides itself on encouraging Asian new media and digital art as its local city, Fukuoka, Kyushu, has held seven Asia Digital Art Awards (ADAA) since 2001. With participants coming from Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, the award has become a prominent event not to be missed by the digital art circle.
Calling for entries until October, the 2007 ADAA announced its winning list on December 28. The award was divided into two categories (“A” for professionals and “B” for students,) and seven titles were awarded to the winners: one ADAA Grand Prize, five Grand Prizes, thirteen Awards for Excellence, two Special Awards, and eighty-eight Finalist Prizes. The event has been sponsored by Fukuoka Local Government and the winners of the ADAA Grand Prize could take home one million yen and the Grand Prize ¥50,000 or half million.
The work of Taiwan digital artist LEE Ching-Liang, entitled “The Modern Chimera of History,” has won the Award for Excellence for Still Images in Category A. Also, one graduate student of Shih Chien University, Taiwan, also received the Finalist Prize in the Moving Images Category.
Lee explained his work in the Artist’s Words: “I have tried to extend the concept of archaeology to ‘modern’ cultural objects by exploiting the texture of concrete and its unique plasticity. I combined several modern objects with self-made concrete sculptures. Then, I used Photoshop to adjust the brightness and the color of the assemblages, so as to simulate valuable excavations which are modern. It is an archaeological work which comes across time and space….”
