Urban Nomad Film Festival, Taiwan's only underground film festival, was founded in Taipei in 2002. It is stepping into its seventh year of operation this year. The goals of the project are to support the local film community and establish links between indie film scenes in Taiwan and nearby countries. After Taipei, Urban Nomad's 2007 festival traveled to Hsinchu and internationally to Basel, Switzerland, Miami and Hong Kong. Urban Nomad showed films from Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore and other countries, and the organizer worked with local filmmakers everywhere they went. Through the screenings, Urban Nomad wants to put an end to the impersonal “black box” movie theater environment where hundreds of people can watch films without really noticing each other as human beings. Film is not just about entertainment, it is about communication.
This year, Urban Nomad will screen films in Hong Kong for the first time, working with local Hong Kong groups Videotage and Microwave. Also, Urban Nomad is seeking entries for this year’s big to-do. Part of the accepted films will be screened in Taipei in late April. There is no nationality limitation and all genres are accepted, whether it be experimental, drama, documentary, animation, comedy, or web-based films. The theme of the submitted film could be politics, music, gender issues, foreign labors, skateboard, surfing, and whatever you have in mind (Kuso is also accepted!).
Urban Nomad welcomes all types of films. However, due to the limited schedule and space, there are only so many films the organizer can show. Therefore, shorter films (under 15 minutes) stand a greater chance of getting accepted. Also, films need to be accessible to both English and Chinese speaking audiences, which means films with subtitles and subject matter pertinent to Taiwan will be given priority. If your film is accepted, you will be invited to an opening party, toasted royally, and potentially asked to speak before the screening of your film. Don’t miss this good chance and join the wonderful experimental film festival now!
